NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Black Friday turned into a black mark against American shoppers as riotous crowds brawled over video games, waffle irons and towels, drawing international condemnation and even raising questions about the state of humanity.

One of the most outrageous incidents of the day was in the Los Angeles area, where up to 20 people were injured after a woman at a Walmart used pepper spray to get an edge on other shoppers in a rush for Xbox game consoles.

Walmart seemed to have a worse day than many other retailers as shoppers screamed, shoved and elbowed each other to save a few bucks.

Incidents across the country included a man shot by robbers in the parking lot outside the San Leandro, California store and shoppers pepper sprayed by security at a store in Kinston, North Carolina.

A fight for bath towels, purportedly recorded at a Michigan store, has become a YouTube sensation. Cheap towels also caused mayhem at a Walmart in Oregon, Ohio.

"They were fighting over bath towels on sale for $1.88, as ridiculous as that sounds," Police Sergeant Jason Druckenmiller said. "A woman tried to get her hands on some towels when she was pushed from behind, and that's when she came out swinging."

Company spokesman Greg Rossiter said violence at a handful of stores marred an otherwise safe start to the holiday shopping season at thousands of Walmart stores.

Videos of shopping pandemonium crowded YouTube by late Friday. One clip showed a crowd crushing and tearing apart boxes in a free-for-all for inexpensive cell phones. Another showed people flooding into a store as the gates were raised.

"This is what the human race has come to huh??" asked one person who commented online. Another said it "looked like a piranha feeding frenzy."

The instant classic of the day was a video of an Arkansas melee over a $2 waffle iron. The shaky, 48-second clip shows a mass of squealing and shouting men, women and children climbing over each other, grabbing and tossing boxes, with one woman seemingly unaware that her pants were sliding down her backside.

"Oh my God!" a woman screamed in the only sentence discernible among the high-pitched shrieks. One person commenting on the video wrote: "The pinnacle of Western Civilization has arrived."

A Walmart in Cave Creek, Arizona, was evacuated Thursday night after a suspicious package was found in an employee break room, Maricopa County Sheriff's Department spokesman Christopher Hegstrom said. A police robot retrieved the package, and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the store before it was reopened.

A video of a grandfather injured when he was knocked down by police at an Arizona Walmart went viral on YouTube. The video showed the man unconscious and bleeding from his face as police rolled him over and mopped up blood. Witnesses screamed at the police, accusing them of brutality and shouting for someone to call "911" for emergency medical assistance.

According to reports, the man was knocked down by police after putting a video game in his belt to free his hands so he could pick up his grandson as the crowd surged around them.

In the Manhattan borough of New York City, shoppers unhappy that Hollister's flagship store was not opening at midnight, as other locations were, broke into the store and stole clothing, police said.

DAY DRAWS MOCKERY

Black Friday drew bad press and mockery outside the United States.

In Toronto, a headline on the website of the Globe and Mail proclaimed: "Pepper-spray, shootings and other Black Friday madness."

Dutch state television showed an overhead shot of hundreds of people camped outside a west coast store. "No tents from the Occupy movement here in California, but clients waiting hours until the stores open," the anchor said.

I listened to music on October 18, 2011, and I liked it.There's only one reason for Halloween and Thanksgiving. I mean it's fun dressing up in a costume and getting candy and having dinner with family, but Christmas is my favorite time of year. The idea of people actually trying to be nice to each other and giving (and receiving) gifts just brings joy to my heart. The only thing I love more than Christmas and Nancy Drew books is Christmas music. Although Christmas is about two months away, I find myself listening to it. If Justin Bieber can record an album in July, I am entitled to listening to Christmas music in the privacy of my own room, since that is the agreement in my household. It's a harsh world!

Now I don't find anything wrong with listening to Christmas music, since it is a genre of music much like pop or heavy metal. If somebody wants to blare Metallica from their car, I can blast Michael Buble's Christmas CD if I choose. As long as I pay for gas, my choice in music should be up to me -- right, Katie?

I can't say what draws me to Christmas music but I distinctly remember listening to Jessica Simpson's Christmas album while driving through the winding hills of Ireland, during my second visit. In some cases, I can listen to songs that discuss the change in temperature such as "Winter Wonderland" or "Baby, It's Cold Outside." This works in my favor, especially due to the October storm that occurred right before Halloween. It almost felt right to dress up as Santa for Halloween, even though that idea fell flat among family members.

Thanksgiving is around the corner and as soon as Black Friday is upon us, I will be blasting Christmas music until I am told to stop. I look forward to the nights of listening to John Tesh giving me "Intelligence for Your Life" while driving around looking at Christmas lights. It's never to early or late to start listening.

Rival Palestinian leaders hold Cairo meeting (AP)

CAIRO ? The long-estranged leaders of the two rival Palestinian political movements held rare talks Thursday in Cairo to try to rescue a power-sharing arrangement that has stalled over who should lead an interim unity government.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a Western-backed pragmatist, and Khaled Mashaal, chief of the Islamic militant Hamas, held their first working meeting since Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in 2007, leaving Abbas with only the West Bank. Abbas hopes to establish an independent state in both territories.

In May, the two reached an agreement in principle that called for setting up an interim unity government, holding parliamentary and presidential elections within a year and merging rival security forces.

However, talks on carrying out the agreement quickly deadlocked over who should serve as interim prime minister, with Hamas rejecting Abbas' candidate, West Bank-based Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas official, said all elements of the power-sharing agreement were on the table Thursday. After meeting one-on-one for about 90 minutes, the leaders were joined by their delegations, Barhoum said.

Some Abbas aides have suggested the Palestinian president is ready to sacrifice Fayyad, a political independent who is popular in the West, in order to move a unity deal forward. The interim government is to be made up of technocrats without clear political affiliation.

Even if progress is made Thursday towards forming a government, it appears unlikely the two sides can go through with all aspects of the agreement.

Abbas would face a Western backlash ? and possibly the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in international aid ? for merging his security forces with those of the widely shunned Hamas. Neither the Islamists nor Abbas' Fatah movement seem eager to risk their current positions of power in elections.

At the same time, the political split is deeply unpopular among Palestinians, and public pressure is a key reason why Abbas and Mashaal are trying to heal it. Regionwide changes over the past few months, including the failure to resume meaningful Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, have given an additional push toward reconciliation.

EU court: Countries can't impose Internet filters

LUXEMBOURG (AP) ? An EU court says Internet service providers cannot be required to install filters that would prevent the illegal downloading of files.

The ruling is a blow to artists who had sought to have their intellectual property rights protected that way.

SABAM, a Belgian company representing writers, composers and editors, established in 2004 that users of an Internet service provider called Scarlet Extended SA were illegally transferring files. A Belgian court ordered Scarlet to install at its own expense a system to make that impossible.

But the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled Thursday that this would require monitoring of all electronic communications of all of Scarlet's customers, infringing on their rights, and violated EU law.

For some workers, the office holiday party is a scaled-back affair.

The company holiday party is slowly returning, but its new incarnation reflects the lingering effects of the recession on corporate America: This year's parties will be smaller, more casual and less boozy.

"There used to be a lot more lavish alcohol displays ? things like martini luges where you would pour alcohol into the top of an elaborate ice carving and it would land in your glass," said Todd Fiscus, owner of Todd Events, which has produced events for clients ranging from Gatorade to Jay-Z. In a sign of the times, he says, companies today are more likely to?host a Western-themed "hoedown" instead of a black-tie blowout.?

According to outplacement consultancy?Challenger, Gray & Christmas, 68 percent of companies will hold a holiday party this year, roughly flat with last year and up six percentage points from 2009, when the economy and holiday party bookings were at a trough.

As 2011 winds down, companies have more reason to celebrate: Most have come through the worst of the economic downturn and are setting their sights on 2012. They're shifting their focus from survival to motivating and retaining their remaining employees.?

"Companies in the recession were fighting for survival, and they cut back on a lot of things," said Challenger CEO John Challenger. "That loosened the ties that people have to the company. Now they're in the process of carefully trying to win back some of that loyalty or at least commitment they lost when times were tough."

The financial crisis that began in September 2008 brought many companies' holiday party plans to a screeching halt. Many canceled because they couldn't afford a bash or because layoffs and other austerity measures made the prospect of a party look unseemly or irresponsible.

"It's?really hard to justify a holiday event in the aftermath of layoffs," said Richard Coughlan, associate professor of management at the University of Richmond. "The remaining employees will think, 'What are the priorities of the firm?'"

Even companies where lavish events were the norm bowed to the pressure. Investment bank Goldman Sachs, which canceled its holiday party in 2008, upped the ante in 2009 with an edict that employees were not allowed to gather in groups of a dozen or more for dinner on the company dime.

Coughlan said cost is still the main consideration that dictates the where, when and whether-or-not of a corporate holiday party. "We're seeing a lot more companies deciding to hold the parties not at some ritzy venue, but many of them are doing them at their headquarters," which can save a lot of money, he said.

Some businesses?are switching from nighttime to daytime events and forgoing a band or DJ in favor of a school band or choir performing Christmas carols. Fiscus said some companies are bringing back the holiday party ? but only for top executives. ?

Alcohol is another area targeted by still-frugal managers. According to a survey conducted by outplacement consulting firm?Amrop Battalia Winston, nearly a quarter of all holiday parties this year won't include anything stronger than soft drinks. That's down three percentage points from last year and is a far cry from 2000, when 90 percent of holiday parties featured booze. At parties where employees can still get their drink on, they may have to choose from only beer and wine or a limited selection of cocktails rather than a full bar.?

Some companies are spending as much as they were before the recession, but these expenditures are camouflaged.?Conspicuous consumption is still out of favor, which means jettisoning the champagne bar and crystal-studded decor, Fiscus said. The menu might be enchiladas and chicken-fried steak instead of filet mignon and shrimp,?but the company might make up for that by booking a terrific band.

"Instead of making it a winter fantasy party ? they might make it a party where everybody could wear jeans," he said. "It's not that they necessarily spent less, but the party feels different."?

"There's no flowing champagne and caviar," said?Dale Winston, Amrop's chairwoman and CEO.?"Even the companies that are doing well are sensitive to the period of austerity that's going on in the country. It's a sign of the times."

Financier Theodore Forstmann dies (AP)

NEW YORK ? Theodore J. Forstmann, a longtime financier who counted the iconic baseball card company Topps and business jet company Gulfstream Aerospace among his buyouts, died Sunday at the age of 71.

The cause was brain cancer, according to a statement from sports agency IMG. Forstmann was the chairman and CEO of IMG and was the senior founding partner of the investment firm Forstmann Little & Co. Forstmann Little bought IMG in 2004.

Forstmann Little, which was founded in 1978, also completed leveraged buyouts of companies including the cable TV technology company General Instrument, Yankee Candle, beverage company Dr. Pepper and Community Health Systems. Overall, the investment firm said, Forstmann made 31 acquisitions and returned more than $15 billion to investors over the last 33 years.

Forstmann was also a philanthropist with a focus on helping disadvantaged children throughout the world. He co-founded the Children's Scholarship Fund.

Money Moves You Should Make Now to Pay Less in Taxes (or Get a Bigger Refund) Next Year [Taxes]

Few people like thinking about taxes, especially when we can be thinking about holiday shopping sprees and feasts, but a few smart financial tactics now can pay big in a few months. The deadline's fast approaching, though. Before December 31, try these year-end tax-saving tricks.

The basic strategy for paying less taxes and maximizing your tax refund is twofold: 1) decrease your income and 2) increase your deductions. Here are some ways you do both so you'll get a lower tax bill come April 15:

First, Estimate Next Year's Tax Burden

Use a tax estimator, like TurboTax's free TaxCaster, to see you how much you can expect to owe or get back from Uncle Sam next year. The exercise of finding and adding up all the line items will show you whether itemizing your deductions will pay off more than the standard tax deduction, and also help you spot areas where you can spend more to save more.

For example, miscellaneous itemized deductions such as unreimbursed employee expenses are limited to 2% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). (Tax estimators can help you figure out your AGI or your can refer to the previous year's AGI on your tax return, if your income and financial situation hasn't changed much.) Tallying those possible deductions up now and estimating your taxes will help you see if you're close to meeting that 2% minimum?in which case, buy all the stuff that would qualify as miscellaneous deductions now (professional membership dues, tools or supplies used for work, work clothes, etc.)?or nowhere near that minimum?in which case, hold those expenses until next year.

Decrease Your Income for This Year

Don't worry, you won't be making less money, you'll just be shifting your income to next year or using your income more wisely.

• Ask your employer to pay any bonuses next January instead of at the end of the year.
• If you're a freelancer, similarly, defer billing your clients for work until the start of the next year.
• If you're retired, postpone an IRA withdrawal, since that counts as taxable income.
• Thinking about selling a stock or other investment? If the investment had taxable gains, wait to sell it until next year.
• Increase your 401(k) or IRA contributions (deductible IRA, Simple IRA, or SEP). These tax-favored retirement vehicles lower your taxable income. You have until Dec. 31 for 401(k) contributions.

Increase Your Deductions for This Year

On the flip side, you'll want to spend towards all the things that decrease your taxes. If itemizing your deductions makes more sense than taking the standard deduction:

• Make a cash donation or take advantage of this opportunity to get rid of clothes clutter or other items and donate them (get receipts for $250 or more).
• Pay bills with deductible items early. For example, if you pay your January mortgage in December or first quarter property taxes now, you can deduct the interest and taxes on this year's tax bill.
• Sell some stocks. Have a stock or fund you've been meaning to sell that's plummeting and will generate a loss? Sell it now so you can deduct the loss. Note, however, that this strategy should be taken with a grain of salt?don't just sell a security for one year's tax savings. There are many things to think about when it comes to investing and maximizing your taxes; check out Smart Money's article on year-end tax planning for some other considerations.
• Buy more tax-deductible supplies or equipment. If you run your own business, e.g., as a freelancer, increase your deductions by buying more stuff this year (yay, office supply shopping and computer purchases!).
• Enroll in?and pay for?that higher education class now, so you can take IRS's learning credits ($2,500 for the American Opportunity Credit or $2,000 for the Lifetime Learning Credit).

Also check your unreimbursed medical expenses. If they're close to or more than 7.5% of your AGI, now's the time to have that major dental work, buy several pairs of eyeglasses, or stock up on meds.

Finally, if you have an Flexible Savings Account (FSA) , make sure you drain it by the end of the year.

The IRS has a couple of other year-end tax-saving tips, including getting a tax credit for adopting a child, but a rush adoption before Jan. 1 isn't as much of a smart financial move as buying more office supplies or increasing your IRA contribution.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? Kurt Budke turned Oklahoma State's women's basketball team into a winner and hoped he'd found the place where he'd coach until he retired. Miranda Serna had passed up opportunities to leave his side, staying loyal to the man whom she had helped to win a junior college national championship and then rebuild a big-time college program.

Having succeeded together, Budke and Serna died together ? perishing in a plane crash on a trip aimed at building their team's future.

Budke, the head coach, and Serna, his assistant, were killed Thursday when the single-engine plane transporting them on a recruiting trip crashed in steep terrain in Arkansas, the university said Friday. The pilot, 82-year-old former Oklahoma state Sen. Olin Branstetter, and his 79-year-old wife, Paula, also died when the plane sputtered, spiraled out of control and nosedived into the Winona Wildlife Management Area near Perryville, about 45 miles west of Little Rock.

There were no survivors.

"This is our worst nightmare. The entire OSU family is very close, very close indeed," OSU President Burns Hargis said at a news conference. "To lose anyone, especially these two individuals who are incredible life forces in our family, it is worse beyond words."

The crash was the second major tragedy for the sports program in about a decade. In January 2001, 10 men affiliated with the university's men's basketball team died in a Colorado plane crash.

"When something like this happens and, God forbid it happened again, we have to pull together as a family. We've got to try to do that," Hargis said, as he broke down in tears.

After the 2001 crash, the university required that planes used by the school's sports team undergo safety checks before travel. Hargis said coaches were not bound by the same rules and that the school left such decisions to their discretion.

Hargis called Budke "an exemplary leader and man of character," and credited him with elevating the team in a tough program. Serna, he said, was "an up-and-coming coach and an outstanding role model" for the players. Former Assistant Coach Jim Littell will serve as interim head coach. The team's games scheduled for Saturday and Sunday were canceled

The school's women's soccer team, which has lost only once all season, went forward with its NCAA tournament game Friday. The tragedy was addressed in a team meeting beforehand, and several players stopped by to sign a banner set up in the Gallagher-Iba Arena lobby in remembrance.

"It's pretty hard just because it's happened once before. OSU came together then and we can come together now," defender Carson Michalowski said.

Perry County Sheriff Scott Montgomery said hunters called emergency officials about 4 p.m. Thursday after they heard the plane apparently in trouble, then saw it nosedive into a heavily wooded area.

"The plane was spitting and sputtering and then it spiraled and went nose first into the ground," Montgomery said.

"It went straight into the side of the hill," he said.

National Transportation Safety Board investigator Jason Aguilera said it would issue a preliminary report in five days, but it could be more than a year before the agency's investigation is complete.

The weather at the time was clear. The plane didn't have flight data or voice recorders, Aguilera said, but it's possible a GPS unit might be recovered and used to reconstruct the flight's path.

FAA records showed the plane was built in 1964 and registered to Branstetter. Oklahoma State spokesman Gary Shutt said the coaches were going to watch recruits playing in two games in Little Rock.

For some, the news brought back emotions felt a decade ago.

"Not a day goes by that I don't think about one of those guys," said Eddie Sutton, the OSU men's basketball coach at the time of the 2001 crash. "It's emotional, believe me. This brings back a lot of unpleasantness."

The Jan. 27, 2001, crash occurred about 35 minutes after the plane took off in light snow. The Beechcraft King Air 200 carrying players and others connected to the OSU men's basketball team crashed in a field 40 miles east of Denver as the Cowboys returned from a game at Colorado.

An NTSB report cited a power loss aboard the plane and said the pilot suffered disorientation while flying the plane manually with still-available instruments.

"Our players right now are totally devastated," Littell said. "They loved coach Budke, they loved coach Serna. A lot of the reason that a lot of these kids are here are because of those two people. Coach Serna was a tireless worker and got those kids believing in her. So, obviously they're hurting because we've lost two tremendous people to the OSU family."

The university hired Budke from Louisiana Tech seven years ago and the Salina, Kan., native compiled a 112-83 record with three trips to the NCAA tournament. This year's team was 1-0 after defeating Rice on Sunday.

Budke coached Serna and Trinity Valley to a junior college national title in 1996. Serna went on to play for Houston before returning to the community college to become an assistant coach under Budke. He also had Serna on his staff at Louisiana Tech and Oklahoma State. She was the recruiting coordinator for the Cowgirls.

Budke agreed to a five-year contract extension through June 2017 last year and said at the time: "This is where I want to be the rest of my life. This is where I want to finish my career."

"His zeal for Oklahoma State was uncomparable. He loved this place. He loved this place, he loved coming in here every day," Littell said.

"This was his dream situation," he added.

Serna, 36, bought into it, too. Top coaches around the country considered her one of the better young recruiters, but she stuck with Budke as the Cowgirls rose from a losing program into one that made the postseason five years in a row.

"She worked hard. She believed in him. That's why she stayed. ... She had some opportunities to look at some other jobs, but she wanted to bring in players and help him win at Oklahoma State," said Carlene Mitchell, another of Budke's former players from Trinity Valley who's now the coach at UC Santa Barbara.

The head coach of top-ranked Baylor, Kim Mulkey, said the deaths would have a wide impact.

"There's a bigger picture out there and it's not a basketball game, it puts life in perspective." Mulkey said. "I feel for the Oklahoma State community. How many more tragedies can they endure?"

After the news conference, tearful Oklahoma State staff members and supporters comforted each other in the hallway of Heritage Hall. Throughout the day, supporters came through the basketball arena's lobby to write messages of remembrance and notes of encouragement to the team on banners laid out near pictures of the four who were killed.

Former Cowgirl Taylor Hardeman wrote: "I will never forget how much better you made me as a person, player and alum. Thanks for the memories. God bless you both. You will be missed."

Drones and satellites dominate the U.S. military's surveillance arsenal, but fleets of unmanned airships could soon join in keeping an eye on battlefields. One robotic airship contender, the modular Argus One, has upcoming flight demonstrations scheduled at a U.S. Department of Energy Nevada Test Site that hosted nuclear bomb tests during the Cold War.

The Argus One's design resembles a segmented sky worm made of connecting modules, and has the flexibility to quickly change its flight path as it slinks through the sky. It can also carry 30 pounds of surveillance sensors or cameras ? true to its name taken from an all-seeing Greek god with 100 eyes. U.S. Department of Defense observers plan to watch it in action during the scheduled December flight tests.

Having a flexible body structure means the Argus One can deploy from even the most remote, mountainous regions of Afghanistan without the need for hangars or airport infrastructure, and can fly for several days straight even in rough weather. Its flight control comes from air-filled bags within each separate module.

Such ruggedness and a promise of lower costs may give manned airships or robotic aircraft a run for their money, according to its description by developer World Surveillance Group Inc. The Argus One can even maintain a fairly stealthy profile in hostile territory, because its payload represents the only radar-reflecting part of its flexible body.

Once the Nevada flight tests wrap up, World Surveillance Group and its partner, Eastcor Engineering, plan to prepare a performance data package being developed by Space Florida.

Google music service faces big hurdles--and rivals (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Social media and mobile communications will be the two big targets for Google Inc when it unveils a new music store for users on Wednesday, according to four people familiar with its plans.

But the giant web search company's new music partners have already labeled the service "unexciting." Music executives had been hoping for a more groundbreaking, fully functional cloud-based service; but after licensing talks broke down earlier this year, Google scaled back their ambitions.

Google's new service is primarily a music download store in a similar mold to Apple Inc's eight year-old iTunes Music Store, the biggest music retailer in the world, the sources said.

The world's largest search company is playing catch-up to its biggest rivals Apple, Amazon.com Inc and Facebook, who have all to varying degrees integrated music into their core online and mobile products.

But Google thinks there is still plenty to play for, according to people who have been close to its protracted negotiations with the music labels.

"Music is low-hanging fruit; it's another reason for people to buy its Android devices," said Mark Mulligan, an independent industry analyst.

Google has negotiated U.S. deals with three of the four major music companies: Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group; Sony Corp's Sony Music Entertainment; and EMI. It has also signed deals with the increasingly influential independent label group Merlin and London-based Beggar's Banquet label group, home to the biggest selling artist of the year, Adele.

Warner Music Group Corp has yet to reach a deal as it is in early stage talks, according to another person familiar with the matter.

Google had previously launched its unlicensed Music Beta service in May to indifferent reviews.

With so many heavyweight competitors, one analyst said that Google can't simply offer a me-too service if it hopes to have any success.

"Google can't just meet the bar set by Apple and Amazon. They're going to need to raise the bar and come up with some sort of differentiation, " said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with industry research firm Gartner.

But he noted that Google's track record taking on the entrenched online media players is not impressive.

"Just look at their ebook effort ... People just don't think of Google as a major ebook player at this point. So it's hard to see how they're going to disrupt music away from Apple," he said.

One new feature that might help Google Music in its battle to distinguish itself from rivals is the ability of users of its social network Google+ to share songs they buy legally with other users. Another user will be able to listen to a song at least once, three people said.

Music executives said that even though music sales have struggled in recent years, music usage has never been more popular on different types of formats like social networks and mobile devices.

Facebook, the world's largest social network, unveiled a music tab in September through which music services like Spotify, Rdio and MOG enable Facebook users to share music. Amazon has also long been a major music retailer and has a music locker service.

"Having Facebook, Amazon, Apple and Google more deeply involved in music is a positive thing for us," said one executive who asked not to be named because negotiations are private.

Analysts say selling online music is unlikely to provide much of a lift to Google's revenue. But they say Google needs to be in the market to ensure that its mobile efforts based on Android can match offerings from competitors such as Apple and Amazon.

Without a music service, Android devices such as smartphones and tablets may not seem as attractive to consumers looking for a product that offers a seamless media experience.

And with music storage increasingly moving to remote Internet servers in "the cloud" rather than on the device itself, companies like Google and Apple have a way to keep users locked in to their respective mobile services, said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis.

"Everyone is using music and media as a jail. Ultimately this stuff is going to be stored in the cloud and it becomes harder and harder to switch systems," he said.

Ancient bronze artifact from East Asia unearthed at Alaska archaeology site

A team of researchers led by the University of Colorado Boulder has discovered the first prehistoric bronze artifact made from a cast ever found in Alaska, a small, buckle-like object found in an ancient Eskimo dwelling and which likely originated in East Asia.

The artifact consists of two parts -- a rectangular bar, connected to an apparently broken circular ring, said CU-Boulder Research Associate John Hoffecker, who is leading the excavation project. The object, about 2 inches by 1 inch and less than 1 inch thick, was found in August by a team excavating a roughly 1,000-year-old house that had been dug into the side of a beach ridge by early Inupiat Eskimos at Cape Espenberg on the Seward Peninsula, which lies within the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve.

Both sections of the artifact are beveled on one side and concave on the other side, indicating it was manufactured in a mold, said Hoffecker, a fellow at CU-Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. A small piece of leather found wrapped around the rectangular bar by the research team yielded a radiocarbon date of roughly A.D. 600, which does not necessarily indicate the age of the object, he said.

"I was totally astonished," said Hoffecker. "The object appears to be older than the house we were excavating by at least a few hundred years."

Hoffecker and his CU-Boulder colleague Owen Mason said the bronze object resembles a belt buckle and may have been used as part of a harness or horse ornament prior to its arrival in Alaska. While they speculated the Inupiat Eskimos could have used the artifact as a clasp for human clothing or perhaps as part of a shaman's regalia, its function on both continents still remains a puzzle, they said.

Since bronze metallurgy from Alaska is unknown, the artifact likely was produced in East Asia and reflects long-distance trade from production centers in either Korea, China, Manchuria or southern Siberia, according to Mason. It conceivably could have been traded from the steppe region of southern Siberia, said Hoffecker, where people began casting bronze several thousand years ago.

Alternatively, some of the earliest Inupiat Eskimos in northwest Alaska -- the direct ancestors of modern Eskimos thought to have migrated into Alaska from adjacent Siberia some 1,500 years ago -- might have brought the object with them from the other side of the Bering Strait. "It was possibly valuable enough so that people hung onto it for generations, passing it down through families," said Mason, an INSTAAR affiliate and co-investigator on the Cape Espenberg excavations.

The Seward Peninsula is a prominent, arrowhead-shaped land mass that abuts the Bering Strait separating Alaska from Siberia. The peninsula was part of the Bering Land Bridge linking Asia and North America during the last ice age when sea level had dropped dramatically, and may have been used by early peoples as a corridor to migrate from Asia into the New World some 14,000 years ago.

The artifact was discovered in August by University of California, Davis, doctoral student Jeremy Foin under 3 feet of sediment near an entryway to a house at Cape Espenberg. Other project members included Chris Darwent of UC Davis, Claire Alix of the University of Paris, Nancy Bigelow of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Max Friesen of the University of Toronto and Gina Hernandez of the National Park Service.

"The shape of the object immediately caught my eye," said Foin, who spotted the soil-covered artifact in an archaeological sifting screen. "After I saw that it clearly had been cast in a mold, my first thought was disbelief, quickly followed by the realization that I had found something of potentially great significance."

The CU-led excavations are part of a National Science Foundation-funded project designed to study human response to climate change at Cape Espenberg from A.D. 800 to A.D. 1400, a critical period of cultural change in the western Arctic, said Mason. Of particular interest are temperature and environmental changes that may be related to Earth's Medieval Warm Period that lasted from about A.D. 950 to 1250.

"That particular time period is thought by some to be an analog of what is happening to our environment now as Earth's temperatures are rising," said Mason. "One of our goals is to find out how these people adapted to a changing climate through their subsistence activities."

The Cape Espenberg beach ridges, wave-swept deposits made of sand and sediment running parallel to the shoreline that were deposited over centuries, often are capped by blowing sand to form high dunes. The Cape Espenberg dwellings were dug into the dunes and shored up with driftwood and occasional whale bones.

The team is examining the timing and formation of the beach ridges as well as the contents of peat and pond sediment cores to help them reconstruct the sea-level history and the changing environment faced by Cape Espenberg's settlers. Information on past climates also is contained in driftwood tree rings, and the team is working with INSTAAR affiliate Scott Elias, a University of London professor and expert on beetle fossils, who is helping the team reconstruct past temperatures at Cape Espenberg.

While the hunting of bowhead whales was a way of life for Inupiat Eskimos at Barrow and Point Hope in northwestern Alaska 1,000 years ago, it is still not clear if the Cape Espenberg people were whaling, said Mason. While whale baleen -- a strong, flexible material found in the mouths of whales that acts as a food filter -- and a variety of whale bones have been found during excavations there, the sea offshore is extremely shallow and some distance from modern whale migration routes. However, there is evidence of fishing and seal and caribou hunting by the group, he said.

The Inupiat Eskimos are believed to have occupied Cape Espenberg from about A.D. 1000 until the mid-1800s, said Hoffecker. They are part of the indigenous Eskimo culture that lives in Earth's circumpolar regions like Alaska, Siberia and Canada.

The Cape Espenberg site has yielded a treasure trove of several thousand artifacts, including sealing harpoons, fishing spears and lures, a copper needle, slate knives, antler arrow points, a shovel made from a walrus scapula, a beaver incisor pendant, ceramics, and even toy bows and toy harpoons. The bronze artifact unearthed in August is currently under study by prehistoric metallurgical expert and Purdue University Assistant Professor H. Kory Cooper.

Test all kids for cholesterol, says US government

Here's a school-age test that requires no studying to pass. The US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute wants all children aged 9 to 11 to be screened for high cholesterol levels.

"The reason to start this young is that atherosclerosis, the disease process leading to heart attacks and strokes, starts this young," says Stephen Daniels of the Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora, chair of the NHLBI panel.

Since 1992, children from families with a history of high cholesterol have been screened, but a report last year suggested the strategy misses one-third of high-risk cases. Testing all children should catch those cases.

But not everyone thinks the approach makes sense. "We have not seen evidence to suggest that screening the entire population of 9 to 11-year-olds would throw out the types of benefits sought," says a spokesman for the British Heart Foundation.

Powell: Listen to Occupy Wall St. (Politico)

Colin Powell says the Occupy Wall Street protests are ?as American as apple pie,? and political leaders need to do more than just ?scream? at the demonstrators.

?Demonstrating like this is as American as apple pie. We?ve been marching up and down and demonstrating throughout our history,? the former secretary of state said on CNN Thursday night.

Recalling his childhood in Harlem, Powell said his immigrant parents had to make ends meet on a modest income, but that they could always depend on job security.

?So people are concerned now that there is not that source of an income. There isn?t that work source that I remember,? he said. ?So what you?re seeing with Occupy Wall Street and others is people who are unhappy, and they?re directing their unhappiness right now toward Wall Street and toward others they think are doing too well in our society.?

Powell spoke warily of reports of violence breaking out in some Occupy protests, noting that some have demonstrated ?absolute nihilism? and a narrow interest in destruction and tearing down the system.

Still, it is up to political leaders in Washington to find a way to constructive listen to the needs of the Occupiers, he said.

?There?s increasing gap between those who are doing very, very well, and I?m doing well, and those who are not doing as well, and those who are not doing as well are not seeing their lives improve. So there?s frustration, there?s angriness there,? Powell said.

He added, ?This is something that our political leaders need to think about. It isn?t enough just to scream at our Occupy Wall Street demonstrators ? we need our political system to start reflecting this anger back into how do we fix it? How do we get the economy going again??

Bahrain: Alleged terror cell had high Iran links (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? An alleged Iranian-linked terror cell had contact with the Tehran's powerful Revolutionary Guard and planned attacks against high profile sites, including Saudi Embassy and a Gulf causeway linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, authorities in Bahrain claimed Sunday.

The allegations from Bahrain's public prosecutor seek to strengthen charges of ties between the suspected underground group and Iran. Bahrain's Sunni leaders have accused Iran of encouraging Shiite-led protests that erupted in February on the island kingdom.

The report in the Bahrain News Agency, however, gave no further information on the suspects or other details to back up the allegations.

The accusations of links to the Revolutionary Guard ? which is closely tied to Iran's ruling clerics ? draws parallels with U.S. claims that an elite unit of the Guard was involved in a foiled plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington. Iran has denied the American charges.

Bahrain's majority Shiites insist they have no political links to Shiite power Iran. Bahrain's Sunni monarchy and its Gulf allies claim that Iran seeks to gain another foothold in the Arab world through unrest in the tiny strategic nation, which hosts the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

A Saudi-led Gulf military force was dispatched to Bahrain in March to aid the Sunni leadership.

More than 35 people have been killed since street clashes began nearly nine months ago. Protesters say they are seeking greater rights and an end to the Sunni dynasty's hold on top political decisions. Bahrain's rulers have offered some compromises, such as expanding the powers of parliament, but not enough to satisfy the opposition.

Authorities have sentenced dozens of people for anti-state crimes like trying to overthrow the ruling system. The case of the alleged terror cell is the first time officials are trying to prove a direct link to Iran and plans to carry out attacks. The suspected targets included Bahrain's Interior Ministry.

The public prosecutor's office also claimed the alleged terror group had links with anti-government figures in exile, including Ali Mushaima, whose father Hassan has been sentenced to life in prison on charges of links to the protests and violence.

The report Sunday said the five suspects have been ordered held in custody for 60 days while investigations continue.

Authorities on Saturday said four suspects were arrested in nearby Qatar. The fifth was detained in Bahrain.

The accusations come before next week's schedule release of an independent investigation into reported abuses by security forces and others during the height of the clashes.

Tropical storm Sean strengthens, nears Bermuda

MIAMI (AP) ? Tropical Storm Sean continues to strengthen as it moves to the northeast toward Bermuda.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Thursday afternoon that Sean's maximum sustained winds are 65 mph (100 kph). It is located about 285 miles (459 kilometers) west-southwest of Bermuda and is moving northeast at 13 mph (21 kph). The storm's center should pass to the northwest of Bermuda on Friday morning.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Bermuda, where storm conditions are expected to begin Thursday night. Sean is expected to produce 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) to 3 inches (8 centimeters) of rainfall there. Swells generated by Sean are affecting the southeastern U.S. coast and Bermuda, with life-threatening surf and rip currents.

The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June to the end of November.

China's Suning signs deal with IBM for e-commerce (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China's Suning Appliance Co Ltd, the country's biggest electronics retailer has signed an agreement with IBM to build a multi-billion e-commerce platform, both companies said in a statement on Friday.

The platform will be supported by cloud technology, logistics and supply chain management and both companies will pool their human resources to build it.

As part of the tie-up, IBM will build a global e-commerce center in Nanjing and will help Suning expand it to hire around 715,000 employees in three to five years.

"Suning, a very clear strategy for the next decade, the important point is to increase the technological capabilities of Suning," said Zhang Jindong, Suning's chairman in a statement.

China's e-commerce industry is booming. Taobao Mall, the dominant player in the market, had 32.8 percent of China's 54.2 billion yuan B2C online marketplace in the second-quarter, according to data from Analysys International. 360buy, Taobao Mall's nearest rival, had 12.4 percent of the market.

Work of Art's Bayeté: I Couldn't Pull It Together At All (omg!)

Did choosing a headline about Sister Act do him in? Or was it Simon's words of encouragement that led him down the wrong path? Perhaps, as judge Jerry Saltz suspects, exhaustion became a factor. Work of Art's Bayet? Ross Smith says the bottom line is he was sent home because his golden doorway just wasn't very good. TVGuide.com spoke with the 34-year-old multimedia artist, photographer and arts educator about what went wrong during this week's "Ripped from the Headlines" challenge, what the doors were supposed to say, and calling The Sucklord Sucklord:

You didn't seem surprised to be eliminated in Wednesday's episode. Why?
Bayet? Ross Smith: The piece that I made, I don't think was a very good piece. I was disappointed in myself for not figuring out a better way of conveying the idea, and crafting the idea into a good art piece. I prided myself on using this competition as a means to experiment... but I got myself in a situation where I was working with new materials and an idea I couldn't quite pull together. Well, not "quite" -- I couldn't pull it together at all.

What was the idea you were trying to convey with the doors and the headline you choose ("Different Church, More Sequins"):
Smith: I've always been fascinated with the spectacle and the pageantry of organized religion, like how they can suck people in through spectacle. That's what grabbed me [about the headline, which was for a review for Broadway's Sister Act musical]. There's this play about this movie about these nuns and it's another commodification of religion.

Unlike with some of your competitors, Simon de Pury seemed to like where you were going with the doors. Do you think that threw you?
Smith: Well, no. He did encourage me to go with the idea, but it's a pretty unusual scenario to be creating art in. It's hyper-intense and the timing is short and you're on reality TV.

Given more time, what would you have done differently with the doors?
Smith: It's a tough question to answer. If we all had more time, everything would be completely different! But if I had more time, I guess I would've been able to figure out the paint drying, printing the crosses bigger, I probably would have done something more creative with the color of the doors and even how I hung them... You'd do so many things differently if you had more time. But not having a ton of time is also the fun and pain of the game.

Jerry blogged that you were a "true artist," but suspected you might have been exhausted by that point in the competition. True?
Smith: I think it's something that exists in reality TV scenarios. I'm not making excuses, but what you're dealing with is the competition, being in an environment that's unusual, and being in a production and dealing with a production schedule. Fatigue can sneak up on you and you might not even realize it. I think it's a fair assessment.

Did anyone but Simone question calling The Sucklord Sucklord?
Smith: That's the thing about reality TV -- it's an unusual situation, so you just go with it. Sucklord? OK! I asked him, "Am I supposed to address you as The Sucklord?" He was like, "Nah, when you're talking to me you just call me Sucklord." I thought, this is kind of fun; this is kind of a gas! It's a great character. I mean, Sarah Jessica Parker called him Sucklord! He's a really good guy actually.

What was your favorite challenge? I really liked the stop-motion animation you made in Week 4?
Smith: That was my favorite. The kids challenge relates to one of my goals as an artist, which is to create work that is a meaningful and compelling and insightful part of everyday life. When I make my work, my goal is to make things that can function from a "high-art" standpoint, but also be the types of things that everyday people can relate to in the context of their everyday lives... I think a lot of times artists wonder, if I'm doing a show for an art gallery or a museum, to what extent is that relevant to the world at large?

Who is the strongest competitor?
I thought Leon was going to be really hard to beat. He was one of the artists I was most impressed with, not because he was better than the rest of us, but because his style and aesthetic and the way he worked was really captivating. I thought he would go really far in the competition, so you can't really say... I think it's anyone's game.
